BARANGAY 471

THE DIFFERENT PLANS OF THE BARANGAY WHEN RISKS OCCUR

HAZARDS

Our community is part of Barangay 471 which is located in Sampaloc, Manila.
Which may experience different kinds of threats like Typhoons and Earthquakes.
To further gain knowledge on our barangay we conducted an interview in our Barangay
hall.

We were able to gain more knowledge on the risks of threats in our community.
Different types of sickness were also mentioned, like Leptospirosis which is
prone in the area especially when there is a sudden flood. Also the risk of live
wires when there is an earthquake or typhoon.

To prepare for these hazards, the Barangay monitor the news and forecasts of PAGASA and PHIVOLCS. Both who forecast and monitor typhoons and earthquakes. They also follow the order of our government or our local municipality of Metro Manila. From our interview we learned of the different hazards that may affect our area. The most frequent is when it floods due to typhoons, fires and earthquakes often happen.

VULNERABILITIES, ELEMENTS AND PEOPLE AT RISK ASSESSMENT

From the interview we learned that our barangay is at risk when there are typhoons. Hazards like sudden bursts of fire and earthquakes are not prone but it is important to know where to evacuate because there are streets that are very dangerous if disasters will occur. Streets like Juaning St. and canteens/dorms located near the area will very much be affected by these disasters.

It is important to know the different evacuation or safe places when these natural disasters happen.Places that are not prone to flooding should be monitored or known when typhoons and flash floods happen. For earthquakes, the best area to go is in the football field in UST which is vast and safe during this event. The barangay also follows an Earthquake drill plan when it happens. They also performed vast earthquake drills like the recent one held aroud last month.

CAPACITY AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT ASSESSMENT

The Barangay also has a Risk Reduction Management Plan to be ready for future events which the barangay might face. An example is the declogging of the sewers and weekly clean up in the different streets in the barangay. They also have a annual earthquake drills for the knowledge of the people.

The barangay have selected different people if these disasters may occur. These people where taught and guided on what to do if these events may happen.

Community Walk

According to the barangay the different posts and trees beside UST may pose a big threat when natural disaster may occur. The trees and posts might fall as well as the wires hanging which may cause electrecution to the people passing by.

The UST field and the barangay hall are places that are safe when hazards happen. When it comes to earthquakes one must advance to the football field because it is very open and there are little to no debris near there. When it comes to typhoons and flash floods one must go to an area which is safe from the flood like buildings with 2nd or 3rd floors like the barangay hall.

I see many of the people in the barangay who segregate their trash, that is very much needed in our community today. And I can say that I am proud that I am part of a barangay that gives importance in segregrating trash.

I learned so much from this activity, the different plans which the Barangay does and will do when these future events occur. Because of this I have a deeper knowledge on what to do and not when events like this happen. By simply just throwing my trash properly I can help my community greatly. This is to keep the barangay and the people safe.
